Want to know some interesting facts about Google?

Google has recently completed 15 years of extraordinary performance and has carved a niche for itself in the world of Search Engines. What has made Google rise above the others? It is sheer creativity, perseverance, and passion for the job. In this blog I want to share some interesting facts about Google.

  • Google was first incorporated in the year 1998 by founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

  • The original name was BackRub and was started by the founders in a friend’s garage while they were doing Ph D at Stanford University.

  • Google is the result of misspelling of the word ‘googol’ meaning ‘a one followed by one hundred zeros’.

  • The button ‘I am feeling Lucky’ was added but never used. But many users did not want it to be removed. It was found that it will reduce Google’s user experience.

  • Can you believe it? Google rents out goats from California Grazing to reduce the grass and weeds found at the Google HQ. They say that the goats are ‘cuter’ than the lawn mowers.

  • It is a rule at Google HQ that no employee should be farther than 100 feet from the micro kitchen that has all varieties of snacks and food. They love food!

  • Do you know why the home page of Google is left bare? It is due to the fact that the founders did not know HTML but wanted a quick interface.

  • The Google HQ sports some peculiar sights like a Gigantic T Rex, some Flamingoes, a real Dino, model of Spaceship one, a large Logo man and colored phone boxes.

  • One of the most interesting facts is that there is a dog in the Company HQ called Yoshka. This dog accompanies Urs Holzle, the senior VP Operations.

  • A recent 5 minutes shut off of the core services caused the internet traffic to drop down by whopping 40%.

  • Till recent times the Googlers were encouraged to use 20% of their time working on their own projects, but now this technique has been sidelined.

  • Some of the company’s philosophy:

    • ‘You can make money without doing evil’.

    • ‘You can be serious without a suit.’

    • ‘Work should be challenging and the challenge should be fun’

  • New employees are called Nooglers and are expected to wear a propeller beanie cap on their first Friday.

Interesting! Is it not? These are just a few interesting facts about Google. With 45000 employees, Google has developed a business culture that is yet to be surpassed.
